Ancient buddha images traced in Bengal PTI BAHARAMPUR: Two ancient buddha images, one dating back to 200 BC and another 800 AD, have recently been traced in Karna Subarna area, near Baharampur, by the additional district magistrate of Murshidabad district, Gurupada Bayen. Bayen told on Wednesday that during a visit to the area in December last, he had located the broken stone idols in the area, ancient capital of king Shasanka who ruled Bengal in the early parts of the 6th century. On being informed, deputy superintendent of the Archeological Survey of India (ASI), a K bandyopadhyay had inspected the area and also the idols in February last. Later, the ASI expressed its willingness to take the idols for their preservation and display in the Hazarduari museum in the district. A letter to this effect reached the district administration on Tuesday, Bayen said. |
