Heir and now: Fight is over LS ticket

Munni Devi, younger sister of slain MP Phoolan Devi, wants to contest elections from her sister's Parliamentary constituency. She announced her desire to contest from Mirzapur-Bhadohi, provided pitaji (read Samajwadi Party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav) wants her to jump the election bandwagon. She further added that there could be a bigger political conspiracy behind the killing of her elder sister. Umed is involved in the murder. He had married Phoolan only for her property and was nursing political ambition," she said. Flanked by her mother Moola Devi, sister Rukmini and sister-in-law Shobha, Munni alleged that Umed was very friendly with Uma Kashyap and Sher Singh Rana and they met him frequently.

She alleged that Umed, in connivance with Uma, who arrived at her sister's residence a few hours before the killing, and prime suspect Sher Singh Rana, hatched the conspiracy together.

The family demanded that Umed should not be allowed to attend 13th day ceremony in the memory of Phoolan.

The Press conference was managed by a former MP of the Samajwadi Party, Bishambhar Nishad, at the Uttar Pradesh Sadan in the Chanakya Puri.

Munni Devi said Umed had political ambitions. "Umed had contested elections twice but was defeated. He is now eyeing Mirzapur-Bhadohi district," she said. She thanked Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav for his "moral support in this hour of grief." In a volte face, she said her family had at no point objected to Phoolan's funeral being held in Mirzapur.

Munni claimed that her sister's marital life with Umed was not at all happy. "Umed used to torture her and many a time she had fled her home," she said. Moola Devi, Phoolan's mother, alleged that Phoolan had even filed a case with the Delhi Police alleging harassment by her husband.

Munni also blamed the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh Government for the death of her sister. "It was the Uttar Pradesh Government which withdrew security to didi." "I saw Sher Singh Rana firing at my sister, I can recognise him," she said. When asked whether she was inside the bungalow at the time of incident, she said, "I had rushed to save her."
