Raped Dalit woman ends life

Nagarkurnool (Mahbubnagar), Aug. 26: A Dalit housewife, who was sexually assaulted by a Telugu Desam worker in Gattunellikuduru village under Telkapalli mandal of Mahbubnagar, committed suicide when the local sub-inspector refused to accept her complaint and humiliated her. The hapless woman died in the general hospital on Sunday. According to State CPI control commission secretary M Linga Reddy and Dalit leaders Ratnaiah and Niranjan, 20-year-old Husainamma, was raped by her neighbour Chandra Reddy, on August 4.

She also suffered bleeding injuries when the accused pounced on her and tore off her blouse. After committing the heinous crime, the accused stole her purse containing a pair of gold ear-rings and Rs 50 and fled to Hyderabad. However, Chandra Reddy returned to the village on August 7 and returned her purse through a person named Raja Reddy.

When Husainamma approached the Telkapalli police with a complaint against the accused, the SI not only rejected her complaint, but also made fun of her demanding that she bring a certificate that she was raped, the CPI leader said. Later, the victim approached MRO Kamara Sultan, at whose behest the SI took the complaint and registered a case on August 8.

But the SI failed to take the accused into custody as he belonged to the ruling party. Instead pressure was brought on Husainamma to agree for a compromise. Mentally harassed by the police, Husainamma consumed pills and was found lying in the Nagarkurnool bus stand on the night of August 24.

She was immediately rushed to a private hospital by passers-by and was later shifted to the Government General Hospital. Husainamma died in the hospital at 10 am on Sunday. Meanwhile, Nagarkurnool DSP Lakshmi Reddy denied delay on the part of the police in registering a case against the accused.
