Dr S.K. Throat, a Jawahar Lal Nehru University professor, was the main speaker on the issue. Speaking in the seminar, Throat said Poona Pact was a way out devised by the Baba Saheb Ambedkar to devolve more political representation to the Dalits under the British rule. He said that the present reservation system was doing no good to the down-trodden sections of society rather it was proving beneficial for only politicians. During his speech, Throat decried the demands periodically emanating from the different political sections to do away with the reservation, and putting in place the modification or proportional representation which would put the Dalit community in disadvantage. Earlier, Gian Singh Bal, PCS introducing the chief guest said that he had rendered services to the Dalit community and had led various Dalit Movements. He said Throat had even worked as the vice-president of Dalit Panther in Maharashtra. H.K. Puri, chairman of the Ambedkar Chair of Guru Nanak Dev University, also spoke on the seminar. |
