Morcha demands protection for SCs/STs
http://www.deccanherald.com/deccanherald/nov27/stg.htm The State unit of BJP Scheduled Caste Morcha today urged Party National President Bangaru Lakshman, who is on his first-ever visit to Karnataka after assuming the office, for prevailing upon the Centre to bring an amendment to the Constitution to safeguard the interest of Scheduled castes and Scheduled tribes against the onslaught of globalisation and privatisation. In a memorandum submitted to Mr Lakshman, Morcha president D S Veeraiah drew the attention of the National president towards the apathy of administration towards the oppressed classes in not providing adequate opportunities in employment despite there being constitutional provisions. While the percentage of reservation towards SCs/STs has not been revised in proportion to the growth of population in the communities, huge backlog of vacancies meant for the communities remain unfilled for failure of the administration in implementing reservation policy in appointment and promotion, he noted. He urged Mr Lakshman to ask the Centre to bring in a legislation to check non-implementation and misuse of reservation, misuse of funds meant for development of communities etc. Mr Veeraiah also expressed his concern over the meagre representation of community people in coveted positions like ambassadors, judges of Supreme Court and High Courts, vice chancellors of universities etc. There is also a dire need to bring in a strong legislation to curb atrocities on SCs/STs on the lines of the Tada Act, as the present Act proved insufficient to prevent atrocities, he noted. ROUSING WELCOME: Earlier on the day, Mr Lakshman was given a rousing welcome at the Bangalore Airport by hundreds of Party workers.
